We are pleased to bring you a summer update on the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Parks Partnership (CP3) Programme, a collaborative effort between local authorities, park management teams, and other organisations working towards the common goal of improving the quality of parks and green spaces across the region for everyone.

The CP3 team has continued to focus on developing the Health and Wellbeing strand of our work by sending out an ‘Expression of Interest’ form to see if a collaborative consortium bid to the Healthier Futures Fund might be supported. Fifty-five expressions of interest were received from organisations both large and small. The total amount of funding requested to deliver place-based preventative health projects that use nature to address health inequalities is more than £2.3m. This figure is far more than what might be available from the Integrated Care System. It demonstrates how much need and support there is for nature-based interventions that address preventative health and care for the environment. The team at CP3 are exploring what we can do to partner organisations to produce a coordinated bid to secure some of this investment so we can deliver on our mission of healthier parks, healthier planet, healthier people.

The team are also collaborating with Living Sport to market opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy our parks and open spaces over the summer holidays with the ‘#letsgetoutdoors’ campaign. This is a great opportunity to showcase our wonderful parks and get the whole family out to enjoy a variety of events and benefit from being together in the great outdoors. We will be promoting a park photo competition and winners will not only have their photos featured on the Cambsopenspace website but also they will receive a supermarket food voucher so that they can take their whole family to have a picnic party onus! (a flyer has been attached below)

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Open Space Forum recently hosted Prof. Jeff Ollerton -Ecological Scientist and Author, who spoke from Norway about Creating habitats for pollinators in parks: “it’s about more than just flowers!”

Pollinators are critically important to both wild nature and human society. During his career that spanned more than 30 years, Professor Jeff Ollerton established himself as one of the world’s leading experts on pollinators and pollination. He is the author of more than 150 articles and book chapters, is highly cited, and his ground-breaking research has been used by national and international agencies to support efforts to conserve pollinators and their pollination services. His key message was that a diverse landscape is the key to pollinator conservation. A bumble bee can fly 2.5km in 15 minutes and ecological features should aim to connect every km. In terms of what to plant, a deciduous native hedgerow is an excellent woody plant as its flowers are pollen rich and it is a stable a reliable feature of the landscape providing food, habitat and microclimate opportunities for many species. It has long been known of the benefits of spending time in nature and in the great outdoors and it is our aim to activate parks to encourage this for the benefit of communities’ health and wellbeing. We are actively seeking collaborative work to secure funding to increase the activities in parks and open spaces and increase the concept of using nature to deliver wellbeing benefits.

Living Sport who manages Cambs Open Space website for CP3 is in the process of rolling out a marketing and communications campaign to support and encourage event providers to promote their activities and resources on the web platform. The resource is free to use for sharing information on activities, events, and resources like suggested walking route maps or nature trails. If your park is missing, you can submit a form with details. It is hoped that the Cambs Open Space website can become a one-stop shop for information on your parks and open spaces. Visit Cambs Open Space.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Open Space Forum has recently held a meeting where Dr Gemma Moore (Associate Professor & Senior Research Fellow in Evaluation) and Associate Professor Liza Griffin joined us from University College London (UCL) to share their knowledge of a project in Camden and Islington parks promoting parks for health. They presented a methodology for assessing if parks and accessible open spaces are reaching their potential as a resource that encourages access and activity. The forum meetings offer an opportunity for those volunteering or interested in volunteering in parks and open spaces to come together for networking and sharing ideas and solutions. If you are interested in joining the next forum meeting is on the 18th of May 11.00 am – 1.00 pm. We are looking for expressions of interest from groups that would like to host a forum at their park or open space in August 2023. Send us an email and tell us why your space would be good for us to visit by 10th May. Groups will be informed following the 18th of May meeting. CPParksPartnership@Cambridgeshire.gov.uk

The Greenspaces Stewardship Toolkit is now available on our website. The toolkit raises awareness of the wide range of ownership, management and funding greenspace stewardship options that are available. It enables exploration of the advantages and disadvantages of different options and learning from others. This enables a full range of solutions to be considered at the beginning of the planning process. The aim is to deliver better more sustainable care of new and existing green spaces. New development should therefore consider and consult with the end users as part of the planning process so that it is accessible, fit for purpose, fully funded and ‘owned’ spaces that can be utilised by citizens for their current and future health and wellbeing needs.

The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Strategic Green Network is made up of well-connected, high-quality, multi-use parks and public open spaces that provide easy access to the outdoors for everyone. The Blueprint is a promotional tool that illustrates how the network can be used to help address the linked challenges of improving health, tackling climate change and restoring nature. If this approach is adopted it will support greener, fairer, healthier and more prosperous regions for local communities. The Parks Partnership’s mission is to show that by working together, an alliance of partner organisations can identify opportunities to maximise the varied benefits of parks and accessible open space for people and the planet.

We have said a fond farewell to Rob Pearce who has left to work with the Nene Park Trust and Gabriella Yeomans who has joined the Biodiversity & Greenspaces Team at Cambridgeshire County Council. New to the Team are Nick Pond Programme Director, Rachel Silverside Programme Manager and Ayesha Maliha Aboni Project Officer. Ayesha joined us on the 16th of December.
Since joining the team Nick and Rachel have been working hard to ensure that the great work of the Future Parks team is carried forward. To name a few focuses for our work, we have held the second Open Space Forum meeting as well as building towards the launch of the green social prescribing project which is now in consultation. The Green Spaces Stewardship toolkit is in the final design stages and is underway to finalise the Blueprint for Parks and Open Spaces. We have both met and worked with some incredibly passionate and hardworking people in the first few months of our being here and would like to thank everyone who has helped us to settle in and has helped to pave the way to taking the aspirations of the Future Parks Programme forward.

We would like to wish you all the best for the seasons celebrations and look forward to working with you in the New Year.

Green social prescribing is a mechanism for linking people from health care, social and community care and support and other routes to community activity which supports their health and wellbeing. Using the natural environment including parks and open spaces, for resilience and recovery. Taking part in activities in the natural environment contributes to the building of social networks and improves and maintains good physical and mental health and wellbeing.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Parks Partnership are intending to run four pilot schemes across the county and cities to support and champion the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector’s role in delivering health based activities in green spaces and to deepen our understanding of local assets and needs. This involves mapping health activities in parks and community sector opportunities in target wards. Working with the community the Parks Partnership hopes to inform investment priorities to meet the needs of specific communities and develop new relationships with a wide range of organisations interested in expanding their work into park settings.

The toolkit raises awareness of the wide range of ownership, management and funding greenspace stewardship options that are available. It enables exploration of the advantages and disadvantages of different options and learning from others. This enables a full range of solutions to be considered, with the aim of delivering better long-term care of new and existing green spaces. Cambridgeshire and Peterborough have a mixed picture in terms of economic, environmental and social conditions, policy frameworks, organisational capacities and abilities, communities and sectoral and the toolkit recognises this.

The Parks Partnership are working with Living Sport to improve access to information for the public about their local parks and green spaces.
